Romo agrees to $67M deal
Tony Romo didn't have to wait until the offseason to get his big payday from the
Dallas Cowboys.
The quarterback has agreed to a six-year, $67 million deal that will be announced today, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press.
The contract, which will become effective this week, includes $30 million in guaranteed money and provides salary cap relief for Dallas, the source said.
A formal announcement is expected today.
"Right now, we're just talking, but it's closer than it was before," Romo said late last night. "I feel like I'm going to be with the Cowboys the rest of my career, definitely."
Romo has been a standout this season, completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 1,984 yards, with 16 touchdowns against nine interceptions, to lead the Cowboys to a 6-1 start.
• New York Jets // Coach Eric Mangini announced that he's going with Kellen Clemens to start at quarterback over veteran Chad Pennington on Sunday against the Redskins. It's a move fans and media have been suggesting for weeks as New York has struggled to a 1-7 start. "I made this decision not based on singling out Chad for where we are, but based on the fact that I think Kellen has earned this opportunity," Mangini said. "I want to give him this opportunity. It's in no way an indication that Chad is solely responsible. We all are." Clemens, in his second season out of Oregon, replaced an ineffective Pennington late in the Jets' 13-3 loss to the Bills on Sunday. His entrance was cheered by the fans who were remaining at Giants Stadium. Clemens was just 5-for-12 for 67 yards with two interceptions in the game, but one came on a desperation throw as time expired.
• Washington Redskins // Cornerback Carlos Rogers is out for the season with torn ligaments in his right knee. Rogers was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday's 52-7 loss to the Patriots. A magnetic resonance imaging revealed tears in the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. He will have surgery in about two weeks and begin rehabilitation with the possible goal of returning for next year's training camp.
• San Diego Chargers// The
NFL and NFL Players Association will contribute $250,000 through a disaster relief fund to the Chargers' fire relief fund to assist victims of San Diego County's wildfires. The fund will help with relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts.
